Plot

Ellwood Curtis' college dreams are dashed on a two-lane highway in Florida. An innocent mistake lands him in the dungeons of Nickel Academy, a brutal correctional facility steeped in the Jim Crow South. He runs into another ward, Turner, who has seen it all. The two black teenagers form an alliance: Turner shares basic survival tips, while Ellwood maintains his optimistic outlook. Against the backdrop of the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement, Ellwood and Turner's existence seems far from the polished oratory of a priest.
