15/21
In the BBC TV adaptation of Poldark
Plot
Follows Rupert Campbell-Black and Tony Baddingham as they see their long-running rivalry come to an end. Coincidentally, Aidan Turner had previously filmed at Chavenage House (a rival monastery). The same filming location was also used to portray Trenwith House in 2015.
Rivals stand out as an absolute highlight
As far as TV shows go, this year was pretty mediocre. It's a multi-layered work that definitely deserves a sequel. It is conceptually a soap opera, narratively a satire and stylistically a period piece.
The contestants are fun, smart, goofy and funny
For once, the attentive viewer will discover a message that is not superficial or forcefully pushing political idealism, but seeks the truth. Not a single episode feels sloppy, unnecessary, or forced; the story and characters build beautifully towards an outstanding climax. The writing, the scenes, the lines, and the direction all serve the greater whole.
Every 80s kid loves the soundtrack
The acting is a pleasure to watch. The always excellent David Tennant shines as a humanized villain, and Alex Hassell is his opposite force. Victoria Smurfit and Aidan Turner make a believable, well-matched broken couple.
Highly recommended, the best show of the fall
Viewers are watching the rise of several new stars, especially Bella Maclean's future.
